Citizen Kane (RKO, 1941).
Three Sheet (41" X 81"). Orson Welles directorial debut was made with the controversial classic, "Citizen Kane." For years, legend has swirled around this picture whose story line was based on the life of publisher William Randolph Hearst. Movie moguls, like Louis B. Mayer, were in such fear of Hearst's power that they offered to buy the negative from RKO so they could destroy the film from existence! RKO refused and released the movie! The picture was not overly popular on its initial release but has since been declared the greatest movie ever made. This is one of only a few known copies of the Three Sheet to have survived and is certainly the only copy to be signed by the director! The poster was signed by Orson Welles during the 1970s and the signature was obtained by noted photographer Steve Schapiro, (Note: The signature is by Kane's right foot.) One of the most important movie posters to ever be offered at public auction! Provenance: The Steve Schapiro Collection. Linen backed with minor restoration by Poster Mountain. Very Fine on Linen.
