Description
Sunnyside (First National, 1919). Very Fine on Paper. One Sheet (27" X 41").A first time offer from Heritage, this magnificent image is perhaps the only surviving copy from one of the greatest silent comedian's best films. Mutual Studios had paid Chaplin more than $600,000 to make twelve films and sought to renew his contract in 1917. Instead, Chaplin signed with First National for a lucrative $1.25 million to make eight pictures. Still in his twenties, he was one of the richest entertainers in the world. In exchange for producing eight two-reelers, which First National would finance and distribute, Chaplin was given virtually unlimited creative control, a situation he had long sought. The result was a series of pictures -- a couple of them feature length -- which stand today as some of the finest silent comedies ever brought to the screen. This picture was the third produced under Chaplin's new arrangement, in which he stars as a lovestruck farmhand pining for the lovely Edna Purviance, a frequent collaborator in Chaplin's greatest pictures. This lovely stone litho one sheet has vibrant colors and little restoration. Mounted on a thin paper stock, it had pinholes and tiny border chips. At one point, there was tape supporting some areas of folds and in the upper border, but there was no staining and the tape has been removed. The poster displays beautifully.
