    Description

The Magnificent Seven (Art Krebs Screen Studio, 1960). Saul Bass Silk-Screen Poster (25" X 35.5").
This is an original silk screen concept poster for The Magnificent Seven. It was designed and executed by the legendary Saul Bass and was privately printed by him in 1960, in an edition of 400, per records supplied to the consigned seller of the estate in 2002. The Museum of Modern Art, friends, and exhibitions, were the originally intended recipients of the posters, and those that remained in the estate after the passing of Mr. Bass have long since been distributed. When shown to poster collectors, they're always fascinated that this image was not used by distributor United Artists. But an understanding of the origins of Bass's brilliant design is an enlightening visit to his artistic path. The design directly relates to the very origins of John Sturges' remake of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai right down to the tilted ends of the number symbol done in the style of Japanese Kanji script. The heads of United Artists surely thought this "intellectual" concept far too difficult for the American public, fearing that they "just wouldn't get it." Only very minor edge wear. Rolled, Mint.
