World War II Propaganda (Ministry of Information, 1939). Rolled, Very Fine+. Full-Bleed British Double Crown (19.75" X 29.5") "Keep Calm and Carry On."
Few pieces of wartime propaganda have taken the public consciousness by storm with as much intensity as Britain's "Keep Calm and Carry On" posters. As far as popularity goes, it now rivals James Montgomery Flagg's "I Want You" illustration of Uncle Sam from World War I, once the undisputed icon of propaganda. However, the "Keep Calm" poster was never actually used during World War II. Part of a series of three, the general public found the first two slogans in the series to be condescending, out of touch, and downright insulting. So, rather than being displayed during the Blitz as originally planned, 2.5 million copies were pulped down for reuse, leaving a scant handful to be forgotten for decades. In the present day, the poster's slogan is considered to be the epitome of British stoicism, a wry but inspirational phrase that speaks to the frantic pace of the modern world. An excellent piece in excellent shape, this historic poster has only the lightest edge wear, soft horizontal folds, and a minute tear.
