    Description

World War I Propaganda (U.S. Government, 1917). Recruitment Poster (28" X 42") "Destroy This Mad Brute."
Propaganda posters from the first World War proved to be an effective way of raising awareness of wartime efforts and boosting patriotism within the general public. The use of striking and, at times, disturbing imagery would leave lasting and haunting impressions upon viewers. This is one such image, as artist Harry R. Hopps depicts a German soldier in the form of a massive, drooling, uncontrollable ape, threatening to bring destruction down upon the shores of America. The mustachioed simian wears a "militarism" spiked pickelhaube helmet while brandishing a club with the word "kultur" (German for culture) in his bloody right paw, and clutching a half nude young woman with his left, thus impressing upon all the barbaric nature of the Germans. Those who observed the unsettling poster were encouraged to enlist, as they were needed to "destroy this mad brute." This is the first time Heritage has offered this staggering poster. Showing only small tears in the lower border, some fold separation at the edges, and light wrinkling, this vivid piece of World War I propaganda is in remarkable condition. Folded, Very Fine+.
