    World War I Propaganda by James Montgomery Flagg (Leslie-Judge Co., 1917). Recruitment Poster (30" X 40.5"), "I Want You for the U.S. Army."
    Dubbed "The Most Famous Poster in the World" by its creator, James Montgomery Flagg, Uncle Sam's piercing gaze and commanding gesture spurred a huge production of war posters in a single year between 1917-1918, eventually becoming the definitive symbol of the U.S. throughout both World War I & II. An image of profound popularity from the moment of its printing, few illustrations have ever had such an enduring effect over the psyche of the American populace, retaining its instant recognizability throughout the last century. Originally created as cover art for the magazine Leslie's Weekly, Flagg's creation grew into a legendary embodiment of Uncle Sam that has been, and will continue to be, endlessly honored, parodied, and criticized for generations. This patriotic piece once had mild tears, pinholes in the background, as well as chips and some paper loss in the borders. It also had writing at the bottom and a tear from the left border into the background. The poster's borders and outer background have been airbrushed during professional restoration. Fine+ on Linen.
