    Description

World War I Propaganda by James Montgomery Flagg (Leslie-Judge Co., 1917). Poster (30" X 40.5") "I Want You for U.S. Army."
A legendary icon of American patriotism, James Montgomery Flagg's arresting take on Uncle Sam inspired a fierce nationalistic pride throughout both World Wars, making it one of the most enduring illustrations to ever come from the early 20th century. Billed as "the most famous poster in the world" by its creator, Flagg's illustration for the cover of Leslie's Weekly transcended the realm of poignant imagery into an essential part of the national identity. An image still used a century later by pundits, commentators, and critics more than any other national icon. A piece of history within itself, this piercing illustration holds just as much power today as it did then, creating an undeniable reaction in any viewer. A prize for any collector, this poster has had touchup to the folds, pinholes in the borders, and small tears in the borders. There were a couple of small chips in the right and bottom borders and a chip in the left side of lower horizontal fold. There are a few thin stains and smudges along the left side that are still visible. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
