    Description

World War I Propaganda (Boston Public Safety Committee, 1915). Very Fine- on Linen. Recruitment Poster (27" X 40.75") "Enlist," Stone Litho Style, Fred Spear Artwork.
Not seen as often in its vibrant stone litho form, this first-time offer from Heritage bears the same famous imagery that urged an isolationist America to action as its well-known offset counterpart. Sparking shock and outrage among a hitherto war-shy populace, approximately 1,200 civilian travelers sank to the bottom of the unforgiving Atlantic after a German U-boat torpedoed the cruise liner RMS Lusitania. Though it would be another two years before the U.S. would wade into the tumult of World War I, the sinking of the Lusitania became rallying point for those wanting to join on the side of the Allied Powers and marked an end to America's neutrality in the tangled conflict. Stark in its design, the simplicity of Fred Spear's stone litho version of this image gives clarity to the artist's message, as well as a certain feeling of finality and loneliness. As poignant today as it was over a century ago, this recruitment poster boasts an exceptionally clean interior for a piece of its age and only shows signs of use in the borders, including slight edge wear, minor tears, a couple of minute chips, as well as unobtrusive stains and smudges, predominately in the upper border. The linen has been trimmed to the edges, but not into the actual paper of this haunting poster.
