DescriptionThe Jazz Singer (Warner Bros., 1927). Very Fine- on Linen. 24 Sheet (106.5" X 233.5").
Heritage has the pleasure of presenting this 24 sheet for the first time, especially as it is one of only two copies known. At the time of its release, the implications of The Jazz Singer's success were not immediately and fully grasped by the public and film production companies. We now know that as soon as Al Jolson spoke, the era of silent films began its end. Jolson, along with costars May McAvoy, Eugenie Besserer, Otto Lederer, and Warner Oland, turned in performances for this picture which left a lasting legacy on the motion picture industry with the Vitaphone sound process. A poster of this size from the 1920's is an amazing find, as billboard posters from this period are exceptionally scarce with only a few having survived. Since the historical significance of this film was not realized until after the picture had completed its run in the theaters, very few people would have had the foresight to preserve paper advertising the feature. Professional restoration has been applied to correct some creasing and tears. There were various small areas of paper loss within the image, including some above Jolson's eye, in the fold and around the "L" of Al, as well as paper loss and staining in the first "O" of Jolson. Still visible is a very minor paper lift in the upper right background, in addition to areas of printing rub-through and ink transfer on this large poster, as is commonly found in posters from this period. An opportunity no one will want to miss, this poster displays beautifully.
Estimate: $20,000 - $40,000.
