    Description

The Adventures of Robin Hood by Jiel (Warner Bros., R-1948). Very Fine-. Original Belgian Mixed Media Poster Artwork on Illustration Board (14" X 19.5") & Trimmed Belgian (14" X 21").
Making its debut appearance at Heritage, this rendering of Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland, one of Hollywood's most famous on-screen pairings, can be found on Warner Bros.' lovely 1948 Belgian reissue poster. Comprised mainly of colorful gouache and watercolor, this illustration takes its inspiration from the R-1948 photographs on the American inserts, title cards, and three sheets. However, the image of Flynn and de Havilland looks far more charming in this artwork than on any of those domestic formats. Included with the painting is an actual Belgian poster showcasing how well the illustration transferred to a printed medium. The full name of the artist, Jiel, is unfortunately unknown, but he is credited with the creation of several Belgian posters from the 1940s to the 1960s. An item unlike any other, this piece shows such signs of handling as light edge wear, unobtrusive stains, and faint edge toning. There is a strip of vellum paper remnants attached to the top edge of the verso with adhesive and there are two registration marks attached to the front with very minor pieces of cellophane tape, however this is part of the production process. The poster is trimmed in the imprint area and shows wear from use, handling, and age. However, the painting is in excellent shape, making a desirable acquisition for swashbuckler fans.
