    Description

The Endless Summer (Bruce Brown Films, 1964). Autographed Silk Screen Test Print (22.5" X 35"). John Van Hamersveld Artwork.
By 1964, filmmaker Bruce Brown had been making surfing documentaries for six years. Working with his business partners R. Paul Allen and Bob Bagley, he was preparing for his next feature,The Endless Summer, and looking for an artist to capture the feel of an around-the-world surfing trip. Bagley had become friendly with art student John Van Hamersveld, who was enrolled at Cal Arts in Santa Clarita. Hamersveld took an existing photo taken at Dana Point, California, reversed it and colorized it with the day-glo hues that were the craze at the time. He worked with a Dana Point printing company to do a series of test prints that would determine the proper balance of red, orange and yellow coloring that would be on the now familiar 11x17 tabloid prints--the wilding posters that were used for advertising in surf shops and school auditoriums. The first larger size posters for the film, like this one, were not available until Cinema V released the film widely in 1966 and later reproductions were being produced for sale to the general public. This silk screen print was one of the earliest test prints and was made in very small quantities. The poster comes from the long-time manager of Bruce Brown's film collection, and is extremely rare. It is signed in pencil, "Aloha, Bruce Brown." The print shows a small chip in the lower right corner, and a light dust shadow in three borders. Rolled, Very Fine.
