Description

Our Mutual Girl (Mutual/Dominion Exclusives Co.,1914). British One Sheet (30" X 40").
Our Mutual Girl created quite a sensation upon its release in 1914, launching a unique, fresh blend of entertainment. It combined elements of a newsreel, advertising, and a "typical" serial. In 52 weekly one-reel episodes, Norma Phillips, as the title character, outwitted villains, saw the sights of New York, met with theatrical and political celebrities and tried on fashionable outfits in chic stores. As a writer for The Bioscope magazine stated, "Our Mutual Girl is a decided break away from its predecessors, and is an ingenious endeavor to interest all sections of the community...it is as complete and comprehensive as one could desire. The whole scheme is without doubt an experiment on a most colossal scale." The serial touts the earliest known screen appearance of Douglas Fairbanks, then a Broadway actor, in episode No. 47. Other notable thespians and public figures made appearances, including Billie Burke, Andrew Carnegie, Arthur Conan Doyle, and James Montgomery Flagg. Mutual Film Company even released a free companion magazine Our Mutual Girl Weekly which presented original stories, fashion news, household tips and other information for the female audience. Heritage is delighted to present what we believe to be the only British one sheet seen at auction featuring a full length stone litho portrait of the charismatic and fashionable Phillips. The poster has a horizontal crease at the center, and small tears in the borders, a few of which extend slightly into the background with tape on the verso. The interior is intact and the colors rich and fresh. Rolled, Very Fine-.
