    Description

The Day the Earth Stood Still (20th Century Fox, 1951). Half Sheet (22" X 28").
One of the most epic science fiction films ever made, this picture wowed audiences with special effects, robots and an impactful storyline at the beginning of the Cold War in America. Michael Rennie, as the alien ambassador to Earth, extends a message of peace to our planet, just before he's shot down by a soldier steeped in fear. The film is also notable as featuring the first major robot (Gort) to appear in the genre during the 1950s. The only other robot of any significance up to this point was used in Fritz Lang's Metropolis in 1927. On this classic sci-fi half sheet, Gort can be seen taking on the US army and striking out at his attackers with a laser beam from his cyclopean eye. Color enhancement was applied to the top and bottom banners and to the woman, and the borders have been airbrushed. Touchup has been applied to a vertical cut in the bottom border/credits, pinholes in the corners, tears in the borders (one that extends into the Washington Monument, one into the "The" of the title, and one into the "S" of "Stood." Rolled, Fine.
