    Description

Metropolis (UFA-Cinema Art Ltd., 1928). Australian Pre-War Daybill (15" X 40") Robotrix Style, Bernie Bragg Artwork.
As unprecedented as the film it portrays, we at Heritage have the immense pleasure of offering the only known copy of this extraordinary Australian daybill. Original paper for this genre-defining classic is among the rarest in the business, and high on any serious collector's must-have list. Fritz Lang broke new ground in the film industry with such titles as the politically-searing Dr. Mabuse the Gambler and his chilling film noir prototype, M. Neither, however, achieved the sheer amount of praise and spectacle as his German expressionist masterpiece Metropolis. Lang practically created the dystopian genre in filmmaking with this elaborate experiment, bridging together the sharp and surreal visuals of the expressionist movement with a grim vision of a societally divided future. German UFA studios poured the hefty sum of 5,000,000 German reichsmarks into the production, allowing Lang to bring the looming towers, steaming contraptions, and flooded slums of Metropolis from the depths of his imagination into reality. These astounding feats of set making and the film's dynamic cinematography wowed even the picture's staunchest critics of the day, and have had a permanent and far-reaching influence on the filmmaking industry. Bernie Bragg, once a draftsman and combat artist during World War I, brings us an image synonymous with the picture in this amazing illustration of Lang's famous Robotrix, now a timeless icon of science fiction. This vibrant stone litho image is most certainly a standout piece among the few advertisements still remaining ninety years after the film's release, and has had professional restoration to address missing paper at the imprint area and along the bottom border, including copyright information. It has also replaced part of the left and right borders and a very small part of the right image just into the skyline. The majority of Bragg's beautiful artwork is still completely intact with no touchup applied. Fine+ on Linen.
