Description

2001: A Space Odyssey (MGM, 1969). One Sheet (27" X 41") Starchild Style.
When MGM decided to re-launch the 70mm prints of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey into New York theatres, the studio decided to revamp the ad campaign as well. The film had been in continuous release since April 1968 and due to that popularity, the studio decided it was time to refresh the ads. This new poster, one of two, that was created out of that campaign capitalized on the film's ending and the news that young people were flocking to the film to view the mindblowing visuals. The tag line, "The Ultimate Trip" was used and the posters were distributed by pasting the posters on walls and surfaces in a "wilding" campaign in New York City in most instances. Since they weren't being distributed by National Screen Service, none of the normal information was ever printed on the lower borders of the posters as was typical in that time. Only a small number of unused examples have survived and of the two styles created, this Starchild style seems to be even more scarce than the Psychedelic Eye style. The poster was rolled and had a small chip from the upper right corner border and a tiny hole in the artwork next to the tagline. There was some minor crimping within the image. Very Fine- on Linen.
