Jimi Hendrix Experience at The Fillmore & The Winterland Ballroom (Bill Graham, 1968). Rolled, Fine. First Printing Concert Poster (14" X 21.5") Rick Griffin Artwork. One of the best poster artists of the California surfer and counter-culture movements, Rick Griffin produced some of the most iconic images associated with the San Francisco music scene of the 1960s and 1970s. A frequent designer for concert promoters like Bill Graham and the Family Dog, Griffin created numerous psychedelic posters for the lineup of bands headlining at such institutions as the Fillmore Auditorium and the Avalon Ballroom. Though he's most prominently remembered for his numerous Grateful Dead illustrations, this design for the legendary Jimi Hendrix Experience is one of his most famous works in his portfolio. Taking inspiration from the stylings of automotive pinstriper Von Dutch with the usage of hot rod flames and the flying eyeball design, as well as spiritual symbolism and references to Native American folklore, this image contains several motifs that would become synonymous with Griffin's career. As it is such a popular piece, the poster has seen several reprintings over the decades, as well as a good number of knockoff reproductions. The coveted first printing posters can be identified best by their size, type of paper stock, and a printing overlap found at the bottom left of the poster, in which the "I" of "Tickets" falls directly over the "0" of the poster serial number "105." Much coveted among concert poster collectors, this eye-catching piece shows such indications of use as slight edge wear, pinholes, soft creases, as well as a minute chip in the top right corner. The poster has had a fixative applied which has minor surface blemishes, and also stained and toned the poster and thus the reason for the lower grade. However, this does not obstruct Griffin's fantastic image.
