The Jazz Singer (Warner Bros., 1927). Very Fine- on Linen. Six Sheet ( 81.25" X 79") Hap Hadley Artwork.Making its premiere appearance at Heritage is this beautiful stone litho six sheet, the only known poster of its kind to still survive today. On October 6, 1927, The Jazz Singer premiered at the Warner Theater in New York City, broke box-office records, established Warner Bros. as a major player in Hollywood, and is traditionally credited with single-handedly launching the talkie revolution. It was through the studio's novel Vitaphone sound process that Al Jolson, one of the biggest names on the vaudeville stage, became the first man to ever speak in a feature length film. His first words were prophetic -- "Wait a minute, wait a minute, you ain't heard nothin' yet!" The production costs for the film totaled $422,000, a large sum for the cash-strapped studio. But the picture was a hit, creating a worldwide sensation and virtually saving the Warner legacy. This fantastic six sheet, featuring images of Jolson with May McAvoy by the popular movie poster artist Hap Hadley, has had corrections to slight edge and fold wear, some fold separations, pinholes, and creases. There are small tears and chips in the borders and folds, as well as a strip of paper loss into the "J" of "Jazz." The poster has a minor unaddressed chip in the "N" of "Jolson," but the piece otherwise presents very well with wonderfully bright colors.
