The Jazz Singer (Warner Bros., 1927). Good/Very Good on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41") Style A.Significant for both its rarity and its historical value, Heritage Auctions is pleased to present for only the second time this original release poster for one of the most important pictures ever filmed. Heralding the end of the silent era, this longform experiment in audio recording became a resounding success as the first ever feature-length talkie. Using Warner Bros' innovative Vitaphone sound-on-disc system, the picture left audiences gasping in awe from the moment of Al Jolson's first line, "Wait a minute, wait a minute, you ain't heard nothing yet!" all the way to the ethereal ending strains of the "Kol Nidre." When negotiations fell through between the studio and the first entertainer considered for the role, George Jessel, Warner Bros. cast the already popular Jolson for the part. He was a perfect choice, not only for his emotive performance style and vocal talents, but also because he served as the inspiration for the character of Jakie Rabinowitz in Samson Raphaelson's original play and short story. Printed with bright stone litho hues, this one sheet highlights one of the most famous scenes from the entire film, which featured not only a catchy version of the tune "Blue Skies," but also heartwarming dialogue adlibbed between Jolson and Eugenie Besserer. The poster has benefitted from professional conservation after receiving repairs to fold wear and separation, chipping in the borders and folds, and tears into the interior. Also addressed was some paper loss from the left border into Eugenie Besserer's chair and hip. There was chipping in Jolson's pants and coat, as well as in the background, the word "Singer," and the "Son" of "Jolson." The majority of the image was intact prior to restoration, and this historic poster now presents beautifully.
