    Description

Zimbabwe Travel Poster (Southern Rhodesia Publicity Bureau, 1928). Poster (24.75" X 39.75") "Rhodesia's Climate Calls."
Wyndham Robinson (1883) studied art in London before becoming a cartoonist. He enlisted during WWI as part of the Artists Rifles, a regiment made up of painters, sculptors, engravers, musicians, architects and actors. Eventually, he was transferred to the Royal Field Artillery and served on the Western Front. After the war, he relocated to Southern Rhodesia and became a tobacco farmer. By 1928, he had returned to cartooning and illustrating, working for The Cape Times. That year, he also created this beautiful stone litho poster of the Great Zimbabwe Ruins for Southern Rhodesia's Publicity Bureau. Robinson depicted the ruins of the massive granite stone walled complex that housed the former capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe during the country's late Iron Age. The focal point is the Conical Tower, 33 feet in height and of an unknown purpose. Construction of the complex began in the 11th century and continued until the 14th century. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it's the largest ancient structure south of the Sahara and second only to the Pyramids of Egypt in size and grandeur. This original travel poster displays incredible color saturation for its age, and very little wear can be detected: light foxing in the top left border and edge wear with tissue archival tape on the verso. Printer: Horters Limited for Pay-Adservice Cape Town. Rolled, Very Fine.
