    Description

World War II U.S. Naval Aviation (U.S. Navy, c. 1943). Rolled, Fine/Very Fine. Aviation Training Posters (3) (39" X 59") Photography by Edward Steichen.
Never before presented at Heritage, the posters offered in this lot should be of considerable interest to history buffs and aviation enthusiasts, as very few of these large format posters survived after the war. Used in the training of new recruits, the U.S. Navy pasted up posters such as these to not only keep up morale among the trainees, but also to inspire the comradery necessary for pilots and fighters to work with their teams through dangerous missions. More than just inspiring messages, some of these posters featured the exploits of specific airmen for their remarkable service, such as the "Pistol-Packin' Airedales," a squadron of Grumman Hellcat fighter pilots lauded for their skills. These images were taken by famed Life magazine and Naval combat photographer Edward Steichen. Steichen led the talented team behind the photographs featured in this poster series, each photographer handpicked and recruited by Steichen himself. These pieces show edge wear, some creasing, and minor tears. Also apparent are small chips and unobtrusive smudges. "Headed for Navy Wings" has slight toning, and all the poster have a tear at either the top or bottom edge braced with archival tape on the verso. Rolled, Fine/Very Fine.
