    Description

World War I Recruitment Poster (U.S. Government, 1917). Tank Corps Recruitment Poster (28" X 41"). "Treat 'Em Rough! Join the Tanks."
With artwork by August Hutaf (1847-1942), this dramatic stone litho recruitment poster beckoned young American men to join and fight WWI with the U.S. Tank Corps, a very new unit at the time. The inaugural Tank Corps training camp was formed in March of 1918 on the old field of Gettysburg. The first battle group consisted of 1,540 light tanks of the French-made Renault FT model, and one of the first officers assigned to the unit was a young Captain George S. Patton. Although the tanks had little affect on the outcome of World War I, the technology was tested and would be refined to provide a substantial impact on the second World War. The poster has been restored on linen to address tears in the upper right background and right mid background, and bits of missing paper and chips in the borders, which have been airbrushed. A first time offer from Heritage, this is a poster of exceptional historical value and was in fact the only large U.S. tank recruiting poster produced for this conflict. Fine+ on Linen.
