DescriptionWorld War I Propaganda (U.S. Government, 1917). Very Fine-. Full-Bleed Recruitment Poster (25" X 37") "Join the Air Service and Serve in France. Do it Now!" Jozef Paul Verrees Artwork.
"The roaring of an airplane motor is jazz music to my ears. I believe that I would rather hold an aviation post than be President of the United States."- David "Crock" Ingalls, WWI ace pilot. At the start of the Great War, the airplane was only ten years old, and the U.S. military ranked 16th in the world, just behind Portugal. By July of 1917, General John J. Pershing requested a force of one million men. To appeal to potential recruits, a propaganda campaign was crafted by the Committee on Public Information that included recruiting posters by some of America's top illustrators. Themes of honor, patriotism, adventure, education, and heroism filled these dramatic, call-to-action pieces. Heritage presents this very rare, original poster promoting the Army Air Service, the precursor to the United States Air Force. Artist Jozef Paul Verrees gives us an illustration bursting with spectacular color for this gorgeous full-bleed poster. The poster has been conserved on older European linen and has little touchup to repair slight folds and edge wear.
Estimate: $1,500 - $3,000.
