Description

World War I Propaganda (U.S. Government, 1917). Recruitment Poster (27" X 41.25") "Destroy This Mad Brute."
Propaganda posters from the first World War often took a raw, unflinching tone in an attempt to create awareness of wartime efforts and boost patriotism amongst Americans. A perfect example is this indelible image by artist Harry R. Hopps depicting a German soldier in the form of a hulking, salivating, plundering primate, threatening to bring destruction down upon the shores of America. The wild-eyed beast dons a "militarism" spiked pickelhaube helmet while clutching a bloody club inscribed "kultur" in his right hand, and grasping a half nude young woman with his left, leaving no doubt about the barbaric nature of the Germans. Along with this incredibly potent imagery, a pointed message to recruits shouts "Destroy This Mad Brute - Enlist!" Heritage has only sold this poster once previously, and the response from collectors was quite favorable. Restoration has addressed a clean tear in the top border that extends into the ape down into the woman's dress, small chips in the right border, and a bit of missing paper in the bottom left corner/border. One of the most impactful "call to duty" pieces of World War I propaganda, this poster is an exceptional find. Fine+ on Linen.
