    Description

World War I Propaganda by James Montgomery Flagg (Leslie-Judge Co., 1917). Very Fine on Linen. Poster (30" X 40.25") "I Want You for U.S. Army."
Dubbed "The Most Famous Poster in the World" by its creator, James Montgomery Flagg, Uncle Sam's piercing gaze and commanding gesture spurred a huge production of war posters in a single year between 1917-1918, eventually becoming the definitive symbol of the U.S. throughout both World War I & II. An image of profound popularity from the moment of its printing, few illustrations have ever had such an enduring effect over the psyche of the American populace, retaining its instant recognition throughout the last century. Originally created as cover art for the magazine Leslie's Weekly, Flagg's creation grew into a legendary embodiment of Uncle Sam that has been, and will continue to be, endlessly honored, parodied, and criticized for generations. There have been light corrections to fold wear and slight separations, a few moderate tears, and a minor chip in the upper right border. The borders have been airbrushed, in addition to parts of the upper background. Very Fine on Linen.
