    Description

World War I Propaganda by James Montgomery Flagg (Leslie-Judge Co., 1917). Recruitment Poster (30" X 40"). "I Want You for the U.S. Army."
Dubbed "The Most Famous Poster in the World" by its creator, James Montgomery Flagg, Uncle Sam's piercing gaze and commanding gesture spurred a huge production of war posters in a single year between 1917-1918, eventually becoming the definitive symbol of the U.S. throughout both World War I & II. An image of profound popularity from the moment of its printing, few illustrations have ever had such an enduring effect over the psyche of the American populace, retaining its instant recognizability throughout the last century. Originally created as cover art for the magazine Leslie's Weekly, Flagg's creation grew into a legendary embodiment of Uncle Sam that has been, and will continue to be, endlessly honored, parodied, and criticized for generations. With its iconic image fully intact, this poster has been backed on linen with no further restoration and shows remarkably minor signs of wear for its age, including mild creasing along the horizontal fold, small nicks in the lower and left borders, thin dust shadows, and mild smudging with faint foxing in the borders. There is slight edge wear in the left border with minor creases, a small tear, and minimal surface paper loss. An incredible treasure of the past, this poster is a rare opportunity for art and history buffs alike. Rolled, Very Fine.
