    Description

World War I "Christy Girl" Recruiting Poster (U.S. Navy, 1917). Howard Chandler Christy Poster (26.75" X 41"). "Gee, I Wish I Were a Man."
Painter and illustrator Howard Chandler Christy first became internationally famous when he was sent to cover the Spanish American War by Scribner's Magazine. Upon meeting Teddy Roosevelt, Christy drew many illustrations of the "Rough Riders." His extreme patriotism was rewarded during WWI when he was chosen to create a set of posters for the US government to promote the Red Cross, enlistment, and Victory Liberty Loan campaigns. He was especially famous for his idealized portraits of the modern woman of the early 1900s, now known as the "Christy Girls." Professional restoration has addressed a couple of horizontal creases, chipping and paper loss in the borders, and border tears. There is a vertical tear from to top border into the girl's hat with small chips, a horizontal tear above the lower border, and there is a tear from the bottom border through the lower text. The borders and lower background have been airbrushed. Fine on Linen.
