    Description

World War I "Christy Girl" Recruiting Poster (U.S. Marines, 1915). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. Howard Chandler Christy Poster (30.25" X 40.75") "If You Want to Fight! Join the Marines."
Painter and illustrator Howard Chandler Christy first gained international notice during the Spanish American War while on assignment for Scribner's Magazine, where he produced many exciting illustrations of Theodore Roosevelt's famed horseless cavalry unit, the "Rough Riders." To reward Christy for his enthusiastic patriotism, the US government commissioned him during WWI for a series of posters promoting the Red Cross, military enlistment, and the Victory Liberty Loan campaigns. Featuring what became known as one of his "Christy Girls," this poster has received professional corrections to small tears, a few minor holes in the interior, and mild chips at the edges. There is a small unaddressed paper lift in the lower background image and the borders have been airbrushed.

    Estimate: $1,000 - $2,000.
