Description

Winter Sports Travel Poster (Thomas Cook & Sons, Ltd./Wagon-Lits Co., London,1928-1929). Poster (23.5" X 40").
At the age of 32, English cabinet maker Thomas Cook founded his soon-to-be international travel company. The year was 1841, and the first excursion Cook offered was a one-day rail trip costing one shilling per traveler from Leicester to Loughborough. Each year forward, Cook expanded his offerings in the British Isles, and by 1855 he was escorting tours across the English Channel for a grand circular tour of towns in Belgium, Germany, and France. Tours of Italy and Switzerland soon followed, and Cook excelled at negotiating with innkeepers and hoteliers to establish good lodging and meal rates for his customers. In 1874, he launched the use of his "circular note," the forerunner to the traveler's cheque, which allowed tourists to obtain local currency in exchange for a paper note issued by Thomas Cook. Routes and destinations were added over the next decades with great success, despite changes in ownership and management and the outbreak of two world wars. This stone litho poster from the late 1920s advertises Cook's ski excursions to the Continent via Tilbury and Dunkerque. Today, the Thomas Cook Group is still one of the world's leading leisure travel companies, with sales of over 15 billion USD. This rare original poster has survived admirably over the years, showing only light stains in the bottom right, pencil mark in the left border, a tear in the bottom left corner and right border with archival tape on the verso, a 2" cut in the bottom left background and under "Sports," and creasing at the top left and in the bottom section. Folded, Fine/Very Fine.
