Description

The Westerner (United Artists, 1946). Fine on Linen. First Post-War Release French Grande (39.5" X 58.5").
A pivotal work in the Western genre, The Westerner is distinguished by its morally complex narrative and departure from conventional portrayals of heroism. While Gary Cooper headlines as drifter Cole Harden, who becomes entangled in a conflict with the authoritarian Judge Roy Bean over the fate of local homesteaders, it is Walter Brennan's commanding portrayal of Bean that dominates the film, earning him a third Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Directed by William Wyler and enriched by sharp, memorable dialogue from writers Jo Swerling, W.R. Burnett, Lillian Hellman, and Dudley Nichols, the film remains a defining entry in the evolution of the American Western. Making its Heritage debut, presented in this lot is the stand-out first post-war release French grande for the film. Restoration has addressed parts of the edge and fold wear, creases, pinholes, fold/crossfold separation, chips, small tears, and misfolds. Many of these flaws, as well as toning, remain relatively visible.
