    Description

The Scarlet Drop (Universal, 1918). Three Sheet (41" X 81").
Young director Jack Ford (he didn't become "John" until 1923) directed eight films in 1918, seven of which starred Western great Harry Carey. Carey took a break from his usual "Cheyenne Harry" persona to play "Kaintuck Ridge," a veteran of the civil war. Here on this only known copy of the three sheet, he's being hidden by Molly Malone (a great actress who had her own series for Al Christie and graced several Fatty Arbuckle and Buster Keaton films). The lighting and the design of this stone litho are stunning. Look at the way the artist has worked the shadows of the loft into the light source from below. A poster this rare demands and received some great restoration and linenbacking, rendering the poster now a wonderful example of the silent era and the John Ford legacy. There were chips and tears in most of the poster, foldwear and cross-fold separations with small chips, and paper replaced in the top left corner and along the left border. Most of the corners have been repaired and any missing paper replaced. All in all, the poster stands for itself and is a fine addition to any serious silent or Western collection. Fine on Linen.
