Description

The Lawless Frontier (Monogram, 1934). Fine+ on Linen. Six Sheet (79" X 81").
John Wayne, born Marion Robert Morrison in 1907, grew up in Southern California, where he developed a love for football and received a scholarship to the University of Southern California. Unfortunately, a shoulder injury ended his football career, but his connections from the USC football team helped him break into Hollywood, where he worked as a prop man and extra. Prior to his breakout role in Stagecoach (1939), Wayne appeared in several low-budget Monogram Westerns, including films like The Lawless Frontier (1934), directed by R.N. Bradbury. In this film, co-starring Sheila Terry and George "Gabby" Hayes, Wayne plays a man seeking revenge for his parents' murder. During his quest, he encounters a young woman whose father is also being hunted by the same outlaw, intertwining their fates as they pursue justice. This dramatic six sheet is a first time offering for Heritage Auctions (we have previously offered beautiful one and three sheets). Expertly restored on linen, this poster suffered from some paper loss, edge wear, and tears but now presents beautifully. Although there is a 1937 distributor's stamp at the top left, this lithographed poster dates from the films initial release. A wonderful piece from the first chapter of John Wayne's lengthy career.
