Description
The Desert Man (Triangle, 1917). Folded, Very Fine-. One Sheet (27.75" X 41").A success story as rare today as it was then, William S. Hart left his well-regarded, nearly twenty-year long career as a Broadway Shakespearean actor for the unknown potential of the silver screen in 1907, appearing as Messala in the very first cinematic version of Ben Hur. True stardom would come two films and seven years later with his leading role in Reginald Barker's The Bargain, gaining instant popularity and becoming one of Hollywood's first big stars at the ripe age of fifty. With a focus on historical accuracy, the true stories of real-life pioneers, and a nearly grim morality, Hart and his brand of gritty Westerns would reign supreme at the box office until the advent of the fast-paced, flashier shows of newer stars like Tom Mix. Refusing to compromise substance for spectacle, Hart eventually retired to his Newhall, California ranch in 1925 after making a total of seventy-two movies over eleven years. This film no longer survives, but this glorious stone litho image is as vibrant as the day it was printed. Other than some very minor edge tears and separation at the center points, this poster is in very clean condition with some slight registration issues in the blue ink.
