Description
The Desert Man (S.A. Lynch, 1917). Six Sheet (82" X 82").Born in 1864, William Surrey Hart was a well-regarded Shakespearean actor on Broadway before giving up the gaslight and greasepaint for cameras and cowboys in Hollywood. More than forty years old before when he made his acting debut in the 1907 version of Ben-Hur, Hart would achieve super-stardom several years later after just a handful of films with his first starring role in The Bargain. Hart quickly became one of the leading stars of the silent screen, specializing in Westerns. Where others, like Tom Mix, tended to lean towards flashier portrayals, Hart preferred his pictures to depict more realistic examples of frontier pioneers. His insistence on historical accuracy over action, however, eventually proved to be Hart's downfall. Although he was one of the highest paid actors in the field for a time, he couldn't - or wouldn't - make the kinds of action-loaded pictures that the public increasingly wanted to see, and retired to his ranch in Newhall, California in 1925. Offered here is a glorious stone litho six sheet from the height of Hart's fame, an original release from Triangle's distributing partner, S.A. Lynch. Professional restoration has addressed fold wear with a few small chips and a couple of chips in the right border. There was a tear and some paper loss in Hart's vest that have also been repaired. Very Fine- on Linen.
