Description

The Crimson Challenge (Paramount, 1922). Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41").
Veteran silent-screen heroine Dorothy Dalton starred in this western (presumed lost) based on Vingie E. Roe's story, Tharon of Last Valley. Dalton's Tharon Last is a rare female rancher out to avenge the murder of her father (Will R. Walling), facing down a corrupt local judge and sheriff, and unlike many of the heroines of this time, she does not seek out a cowboy to do this for her, but she wants to do so all by herself! Tharon learns how to wrangle a gun, and manages to out-draw the murderer (Frank Campeau). This strikingly designed one sheet has a wonderful full-lenght image of Dalton preparing to draw her guns in the climactic gunfight (which is one with a rare use of "negative space", which the background is filled in over Dalton's clothes). This is offered for the first time by Heritage and is likely the only surviving example of this one sheet (and perhaps the only surviving movie paper from this film). The poster is currently on loan to the Silent West exhibit at the Autry Museum of the American West, where it will remain through March 2023. It has not been examined out of the frame. Special shipping arrangements will need to be made at the conclusion of the loan term.
