North to Alaska by John Lee Martin & Martin Rackin (20th Century Fox, 1959). Very Fine. Writer's Working Script (137 Pages, 9.5" X 11.5") Working Title: The Alaskans.
Though it was popular at the box office when the film reached theaters, this John Wayne comedic Western had been plagued by problems since it began production. Chief among those issues was the lack of a complete script, forcing director Henry Hathaway and the cast (consisting of Stewart Granger, Ernie Kovacs, Fabian, and Capucine) to improvise much of the film. Writers John Lee and Martin Rankin, who wrote the draft presented here, actually left partway through production to work in television without a finished story. To complicate matters further, the project suffered even more delays in 1960 when the Writers Guild of America went on strike for over twenty weeks. This is evident in the pages of this 1959 working script, which ends in the midst of a dramatic conflict. Never presented before at Heritage, this mimeographed yellow page script comes bradded in studio wrappers, and is dated February 4, 1959. The vast majority of the wear can be found on the outer covers, including edge and spine wear, creasing, and very minor tears. There is some edge and spine toning, as well as faint smudges. The writing on the front cover is part of the official writing process, as is the stamped serial number. Very Fine.
