    Description

World War II U.S. Naval Aviation (U.S. Navy, c. 1943). Rolled, Fine/Very Fine. Aviation Training Posters (4) (Approx. 39.25" X 59") Photography by Charles Kerlee and Fenno Jacobs, Under the Direction of Edward Steichen.
Highly collectible for their significant scarcity and making their first ever appearance at Heritage Auctions, these large format posters from the U.S. Navy served to inspire courage and pride in new aviation recruits, but were soon destroyed when they no longer served a purpose during peacetime. Highlights from the posters include images of fighters like the Vought Corsairs and Grumman Wildcats. Famed Life magazine and Naval combat photographer Edward Steichen led the talented team behind the photographs featured in this poster series, each photographer handpicked and recruited by Steichen himself. Charles Kerlee is credited with the photographs of the Grumman Avenger torpedo bombers as well as the shot of a Douglass Dauntless bomber from the October 5, 1943 raid of Wake Island, and the viewer, through the lens of Fenno Jacobs, is given a glance into the daily lives of sailors in the mess hall image. There is mild edge wear, some creasing, and small tears. Also visible are minor chips, as well as unobtrusive stains and smudges. The "Dive Bomber Over Wake" has toning at the top and each poster has a tear at the bottom braced with archival tape on the verso. Rolled, Fine/Very Fine.
