    Description

World War II Propaganda Lot (U.S. Government Printing Office, 1943/1945). Posters (2) (8.5" X 12" & 14" X 22") "China Fights On" & "Miles of Hell to Tokyo."
The U.S. government commissioned posters such as this "Miles of Hell to Tokyo" image to guard against complacency by civilians during WWII, and as a reminder of the harsh reality of the Armed Forces overseas. The poster was designed by Amos Sewell in 1945 (light wrinkling and stains). The second poster was issued through United China Relief, an American philanthropic organization formed in 1941 from of a number of existing groups, including the American Bureau for Medical Aid to China, the China Emergency Relief Committee, and the American Committee for Chinese War Orphans. Among its board of directors were Pearl S. Buck, David O. Selznick, John D. Rockefeller III, Theodore Roosevelt Jr. and Eleanor Roosevelt. The organization raised over $50 million in donations to aid China in its resistance against Japanese occupation. This poster features a patriotic portrait of a soldier of the Chinese Nationalist Army. Designed by artist John Gaydos, the piece shows only small edge tears at the top. Rolled, Very Fine-.
