World War II Propaganda by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel (1943). Framed War Bonds Poster (48" X 14") "Starve the Squander Bug."
Though he's known almost exclusively for his famous series of children's books, Theodor Geisel, otherwise known as Dr. Seuss, had a varied career long before his literary fame. He started out the same way as many other famous American artists, like Norman Rockwell, by becoming an ad illustrator and comic creator for such entities as Vanity Fair, Life, The Saturday Evening Post, NBC, General Electric, and Standard Oil. But, it was when America joined its European Allies in WWII that he discovered a newfound passion, if not obsession. With four of his classic books already under his belt, Geisel shifted away from his burgeoning career in children's literature to singlemindedly focus on political cartoons. Poignant, critical, and scathing in his pro-war pieces, the fervent Geisel churned out over 400 of these cartoons in just two short years. He gained the notice of U.S. government, who hired him to create propaganda for the Treasury Department and the War Production Board, where he drew up this unique poster with a good dose of his trademark whimsy. History buffs should be overjoyed at the opportunity to obtain such an incredible piece as this, already ready for display in a classy frame that is included in the purchase. The poster has also been made presentable with touchup at the folds, a few mild creases, pinholes at the edges, and a reattached bottom left corner chip. Folded, Very Fine.
