World War I Propaganda (War Bonds, 1918). British War Bond Poster (20" X 30") "Your Maxim, Buy War Bonds," Bert Thomas Artwork
This poster was used in two versions, this being the second. It has a large printed snipe over the original wording which says, "Feed the Guns with War Bonds, and Help End the War." Later applied was the wording, "Your Maxim, Buy War Bonds." National War Bonds were not an entirely alien concept to the thousands that bought them; the Government had previously introduced modest schemes including War Savings Certificates and Exchequer Bonds. However, it was National War Bonds, first introduced in 1917, that seemingly captured the imagination of the masses. The bonds were short-term government secured investments. For many they would have seemed a risk free way to make money and a chance to secure victory for Britain. This depiction of an Army Gunner being fed his ammunition with War Bonds is one of many used in the Great War to advance the cause. The poster is conserved on linen with no restoration work. Very Fine on Linen.
