    Description

World War I Propaganda (U.S. Government Printing Office, 1918). Fine- on Linen. Fourth Liberty Loan Poster (36" X 56") "For Victory, Buy More Bonds," John Scott Williams Artwork.
It's hard to find a better depiction of patriotism than that found on this masterful piece by artist John Scott Williams. With a sword drawn and shield in hand, a figure draped in an American flag in front of a soaring eagle directs troops to victory. The U.S. government created numerous posters in an attempt to reach out to citizens, encouraging them to purchase bonds. One of the most striking examples of that effort, this poster has received corrections to fold wear and separation, creases, pinholes, and large tears, including a tear that extended from the right border into the eagle's wing on the left side of the image. Restoration has reattached a few instances of paper loss in the lower part of the poster. Still visible is some surface scuffing, small stains and smudges, as well as slight color fading.
