World War I Propaganda (Sergeant Bros. LTD., 1915). Full Bleed British Poster (19.5" X 29") 1805 "England Expects" 1915.
After the First World War broke out in the summer of 1914, many thousands of British men volunteered for military service. Within months it became clear that recruiting enough volunteers to win the war was a huge task. The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee was put in charge of boosting numbers of volunteers, and soon commissioned posters from the best graphic artists of the day. They were put up in as many public places as possible, to attract attention and to boost recruitment. This lovely British poster pictures Admiral Horatio Nelson, who proclaimed, "England expects that every man will do his duty," from his flagship HMS Victory just before the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October, 1805. The poster has been professionally conserved on linen with minimum touchup. Very Fine on Linen.
