    Description

World War I Propaganda (Selmar Beyar, 1918). German Poster (27" X 38.5") "What England Wants!" (German: "Was England Will!"), Egon Tschirch Artwork.
This dramatic and chilling poster shows swarms of British planes bombing a German factory. There is a translated quote from British Labour party leader Johnson-Hicks which appeared in the Daily Telegraph, Jan. 3, 1918: "One must bomb the Rhine industrial area day by day with hundreds of airplanes, until the cure destruction of German industrial production has occurred." This and the other fabulous rendering offered in the auction by artist Egon Tschirch are of note in that this was the last of the Germans use of the old Gothic typeface and would soon be made obsolete by the end of the war. Hitler would forbid the use of the type style as he associated it with an older, more traditional society. The top and left borders have been airbrushed, and there was a tear to a staple hole in the bottom left corner. There are some minor unaddressed tears in the borders, as well as a few small tears in the interior. Very Fine- on Linen.
