    Description

World War I Propaganda (Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, 1915). Very Fine- on Linen. British Recruiting Double Crown (20" X 29.5") "Daddy, What Did YOU Do in the Great War?"
Having only a modest standing army at the beginning of World War I, Britain was in dire need of troops, yet wanted to delay forced conscription for as long as possible. Hence, the government put forth an extensive propaganda campaign to recruit new soldiers into their ranks, and few of their entries are as masterful as this famous piece. Many men were hesitant to leave behind their families and take a massive pay cut by joining the Britain's armed forces, afraid they would drive their family into poverty during their absence. And so, instead of making their typical appeals of duty or patriotism, the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee targeted a far more basic motivation: guilt. The tactic proved effective in 1915, resulting in a 50% increase of recruitments compared to 1914. The tagline, along with its carefully crafted image, has now become one of the most memorable pieces of British propaganda from WWI. It's Heritage's first time to offer this highly desirable, stone litho poster, which has light partial touchup applied to the folds, edge wear with small tears, pinholes, and a couple of minor chips at the edges. Very Fine-on Linen.
