    Description

World War I Propaganda (Paris, 1916). French Affiche (31.25" X 44.5") Charles Fouqueray Artwork. Miscellaneous.
Offered is a powerful piece from artist Charles Dominique Fouqueray, depicting Cardinal Désiré-Joseph Mercier - renowned for his theological scholarship, along with his fiercely outspoken opposition to the German occupation of Belgium during the Great War. His pastoral letter, Patriotism and Endurance, was distributed by hand throughout that nation's churches in the winter of 1915, and was pivotal in maintaining the people's resistance during those troubled times. A partially restored poster with bright color and a clean overall appearance. Touchup has been applied to slight wear and tears in the edges and folds, along with a handful of pinholes. The linen has been trimmed to the border. Unaddressed and/or post-restoration includes a few minor chips in the borders, along with some unobtrusive stains. There is an ink judiciary stamp near the lower border, as well. Grades on all restored items are pre-restoration grades. Please see full-color, enlargeable image above for more details. Very Fine- on Linen.
