World War I Propaganda (Jewish Relief Campaign, 1917). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. Poster (30" X 40") "Share," Burke/Johnstone Studios Artwork.
World War I wrought devastation on numerous towns, cities, and villages throughout Europe, displacing countless citizens from destroyed homes and captured territories. However, the Jewish communities of eastern Europe were among the hardest hit during the war. Despite nearly half a million Jews voluntarily joining the Czarist ranks, the invading Russian military deported over 600,000 Austrian Jews along the Eastern front under the suspicion of enemy collaboration. Early on, the German and Austro-Hungarian forces instead courted the Jewish populations of Poland and other contested territories with propaganda, welcoming 100,000 Jews into the German military service. By the end of the war, however, the ingrained prejudices and suspicions of the populace won out, resulting in a new wave of Jewish refugees from central and eastern Europe. In response to this crisis, the Zionist communities in other countries formed aid organizations to help their displaced brethren, such as the Jewish Relief Campaign advertised here in beautiful stone lithography. Illustrated with a benevolent Columbia to inspire the generosity of viewers, this first-time offer at Heritage had light touchup applied to minor border tears, a small reattached chip in the top right corner, and a tear from the bottom border through the lower text. Unaddressed are some corner bends, a dust shadow in the top right corner, and surface scuffing. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
