    Description

World War I Propaganda (Ivan Sytin, 1914). Russian Lubok Poster (23" X 32.85") "Fight Against the Germans."
This lubok was a popular style of poster with the Russian people for its narrative images that boost morale and strengthen agitation against the enemy. This poster features a melee between the Russian and German armies in which the fighting had reduced to using bayonets again each other. The print was produced by the house of Ivan Sytin, the most popular and successful printer in Russia at the time. The lower credits translate to: "At the end of November, there were fierce attacks of the Germans on our position for two days, which were repulsed by our troops on all fronts. We moved into the bayonet counterattack and in the end went to a general offensive and turned the enemy to flight. We captured four cannons, seven machine guns and many prisoners." The poster shows some edge wear, corner bends, enlarged pinholes in the upper borders, small tears, and light foxing in the borders. The lower border is lightly trimmed in the middle, when the linen was trimmed to the edges of the poster. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
