DescriptionWorld War I Propaganda by James Montgomery Flagg (Leslie-Judge Co., 1917). Very Fine- on Linen. Recruitment Poster (29.75" X 40"), "I Want You for the U.S. Army." At the top of his career, James Montgomery Flagg was the highest paid magazine illustrator in America, and this famous poster for the U.S. Army is the crowning achievement of his great body of work. Using his own image to avoid having to hire a model (adding only some age and a white goatee), he fashioned one of the most successful recruitment posters ever printed. Indeed, the design was so popular that the military revived it for WWII, and it is still relevant over a century after its creation. Never folded, this stone litho icon of American history has had touchup applied to pinholes in the borders, a few small tears, and a couple of minor chips. There was writing in the imprint area that has been sanded and airbrushed, rendering it unnoticeable. Very Fine- on Linen.
Estimate: $3,000 - $6,000.
