World War I Propaganda by James Montgomery Flagg (American Red Star Animal Relief, c. 1917). Fine on Linen. Poster (23" X 33") "Help Him to Help U.S.!"
American Humane began doing animal relief in 1916, by accepting an invitation of the War Department to help animals used by the U.S. Army during WWI. The invitation resulted in the development of the American Red Star Animal Relief Program known today as Animal Emergency Services. The U.S. armed services used 243,135 horses and mules during the war to transport supply wagons, ambulances, traveling kitchens, water carts, food, engineer equipment, light artillery, and tons of shells. Horses were used in direct combat, as well. This wonderful image by James Montgomery Flagg was used to solicit funds needed in the war effort. Backed on linen, the poster still shows creasing at the edges, mostly small tears, and unobtrusive smudges. There is a tear into Uncle Sam's leg, another through the word "Star," as well as a couple of spliced chips a the bottom. These issues have had some light touchup applied.
