    Description

World War I "Christy Girl" Recruiting Poster (U.S. Marines, 1915). Howard Chandler Christy Poster (29" X 39.5"). "If You Want to Fight! Join the Marines."
Though over a century has passed since its printing, this exquisite poster still evokes a sense of the prevailing innocence, patriotism, and national pride of early 20th century America, before WWI took its toll. Painter and illustrator Howard Chandler Christy first gained international notice during the Spanish American War while on assignment for Scribner's Magazine, where he produced many exciting illustrations of Theodore Roosevelt's famed horseless cavalry unit, the "Rough Riders." To reward Christy for his enthusiastic patriotism, the US government commissioned him during WWI for a series of posters promoting the Red Cross, military enlistment, and the Victory Liberty Loan campaigns. Featuring what became known as one of his "Christy Girls," this lovely poster has had touchup to the word "Fight!," the red accents on the girl's uniform, as well as her eyes and teeth. The poster still shows slight edge wear in the right border, light toning in the borders, and some color fading. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
