Description

Vietnam War Propaganda (1960s). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. Vietnamese-Language Poster (24.25" X 37.25") "United Spring Means Spring of Victory."
Throughout its involvement in the Vietnam civil war between the Viet Cong-allied northern portion of the country and South Vietnam, the U.S. not only assisted the latter with physical means of war but worked with Southern Vietnamese leaders to produce an intensive, lengthy propaganda campaign to psychologically influence morale on both sides of the conflict. These posters were not only aimed at the northern Vietnamese to try and convert them to the south's cause, but they also regularly addressed relations between the U.S. and South Vietnam, particularly targeting citizens whose lives had been immensely influenced by the massive U.S. presence in the region. Some of these campaigns focused on national holidays, especially Tet, the country's celebration of the Lunar New Year, which can be seen on the poster Heritage offers here for the first time. Tet, also known as the Spring Festival, is the focus of this poster, highlighting the familiar iconography of apricot flowers blooming and children playing with firecrackers while presenting a message promoting unity both amongst the South Vietnam people and between them and their U.S. cohabitants. The poster shows mild signs of wear, including a 3.5" vertical tear just above the upper text, corner creases, and another minute tear, a couple of enlarged pinholes, and a minute stain in the lower right corner. Though no other restorative work has been applied outside of linen backing, the poster still presents with bright color and a clean overall appearance.
